Over the years in various conversations about the origins of the Klon, OCD, and Sparkle Drive, I’ve long maintained that the development process is pretty logical. Someone tries to put a tone knob on the 250 circuit, it sounds like crap, then they add a make-up gain stage and/or a charge pump, and then they have something new.
This got me thinking; what if in an alternate universe some handsome pedal modder decided to start with the charge pump instead. Started at the end?
This daydream is what led to this year’s LF351 LTD Edition. I added an 18v charge pump to the Yellow Spiral, which led to changing the Girth control to its opposite - a Shave control. Clockwise adds more high frequency sparkle, counter-clockwise gets darker and more mid heavy. I also changed the Texture Toggle to have three discrete selections:
- 80n Special Yellow version
- 1N914 Silicon
- LED (Low Vf red)
This resulted in quite a monster. The LTD LF351 Yellow is loud, aggressive, explosive, beefy, and kind of nuts. I wish I had tried this earlier because it is really something!
Dawn contributed a lot to this version. She did custom knobs, custom yellow 80n’s, and a custom gold I/O plate. I think these accents look amazing with the Storm Gray powder-coat and folio graphics.
